Introduced by type designer, librarian, and system engineer, Saad D. Abulhab, in the year 2000, the Mutamathil type style is a design style intended for the creation of generic, calligraphy-free, Arabetic typefaces and font families. The main goal of this style is to enrich and diversify the options available today to both users and vendors to render and print Arabetic scripts. The principles of the Mutamathil type style design address the challenges of literacy, education, economics, technology, globalism, competition, as well as legibility. With its open design approach, it includes three design styles: the right to left "Mutamathil" and "Mutamathil Taqlidi", and the bi-directional "Mutamathil Mutlaq." "Mutamathil" and "Mutamathil Mutlaq" have only one glyph (shape) per letter. "Mutamathil Taqlidi" has additional final-position glyphs for all letters that may traditionally join other letters from both sides. Also, both "Mutamathil" and "Mutamathil Taqlidi" include optional Lam-Alif ligatures.  >>>

Mutamathil Fonts Availability

In 2004, a small type foundry, Arabetics™, was established by the founder of the Mutamathil type style with a main emphasis on producing Arabetic fonts following the principles of this open design style. As a result of Arabetics continuing commitment to make available wide font options to users and software producers of Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and other Arabetic scripts computing environment, many fonts are now available for licensing through arabetics.com, or major fonts distributors like myfonts.com.

Other Related projects

In 2006, the founder of the Mutamathil type style has also established a web site, arabetica.com, as one platform for users to experience first hand the mutamthil fonts and other associated technology available by Arabetics. One such utility now available free of charge on arabetica.com is Arabetic Notepad which is a simple editor and emailer incorporating the Mutamathil font model. The arabetica.com project will conduct research including user studies and surveys to help advance the educational and technological mission of this style.
